Media reporting has claimed that Israel is finalising the decision to strike Iran. Meanwhile, President Trump has confirmed that he informed the Israelis of his opposition to such a strike.

After Iran’s last missile barrage on Israel, the Israelis had to request the deployment of American Terminal High Altitude Air Defence (THAAD) systems, the most advanced American air defence system. Israel is fully reliant on the American defence industry for its basic national security, from aviation to anti-tank missiles to air defence to political cover.

We accept that Israel has enormous influence over American politics, and that Netanyahu personally defied and humiliated President Obama. We also accept that Israel may calculate that striking Iran would force the Americans’ hand and impose escalation, rather than a deal.
